My Kids Music PLAYlist

My rock concert fan with her sippy cup

Thanks to all the people who entered So Very Vienna’s contest to give away two tickets and a CD for this past weekend’s Alastair Moock show at Jammin Java. The show was fun: a few dozen kids, a guitar and banjo, and parents downing cups of coffee has the makings of a good time.

For those of you who are still looking for more ideas for kid’s music that won’t make you crazy, here is a selection of what I call Bug’s PLAYlist, that I have at-the-ready on the iPod. They are songs from my own music collection that I think are age appropriate (more or less) and inspire spontaneous dancing:

  • All This Time – Sting
  • Banana Pancakes – Jack Johnson
  • Blue Danube Waltz – Strauss
  • Bolero – Maurice Ravel
  • Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You – Frankie Vallie
  • The Carwash
  • Day-o – Harry Belafonte
  • Don’t Know Why – Norah Jones
  • Hakuna Mata – from The Lion King
  • Hanuman – Rodrigo y Gabriela (beautiful Latin-infused acoustic guitar)
  • Have You Ever – Brandi Carlile
  • Hold My Hand – Hootie and the Blowfish
  • Hold You In My Arms – Ray LaMontagne
  • Homeless – Paul Simon
  • I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) – The Four Tops
  • I Get a Kick Out of You – Frank Sinatra
  • Lost in a Crowd – Rusted Root
  • Ooh La La – Rod Stewart
  • Peaceful Easy Feeling – The Eagles
  • Put the Lime in the Coconut – The Hit Crew
  • Saturday in the Park – Chicago
  • Singing in the Rain – Count Basie
  • Smoothie Song – Nickel Creek
  • The Sound of Sunshine – Michael Franti & Spearhead
  • Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
  • William Tell Overture – Giachino Rossini
  • Winer Winds – Mumford & Sons
  • Yakety Yak – The Coasters

  1. For the last several weeks, Bug has been obsessed with the Laurie Berkner song, “Let’s Go Swimming”. It’s about fish that take a shower, then realize that fish don’t take showers. And fish that brush their teeth, but then realize fish don’t brush teeth. You get the idea. It’s a lot of fun. Even on repeat.
